A Day Trip to Gloucester Cathedral
Gloucester Cathedral is one of England’s most impressive historic buildings and my destination for a day trip from Tewkesbury, thanks to the lovely ladies who helped me navigate the number 71 bus! Bluey had a well earned rest today.
Located in the heart of Gloucester, the cathedral has stood for nearly 1,000 years, with origins as a Norman abbey church founded in the 11th century. It has a vast nave, intricate medieval stonework remarkable fan-vaulted cloisters, which are among the finest and oldest in the country. The cloisters are also well known as a filming location for several Harry Potter films.
The breathtaking medieval fan vaults
A closer look at the extraordinary cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral. Completed in the late 14th century, these intricate stone ribs form the earliest surviving example of fan vaulting anywhere in Britain.
The fan vaulting was really hard to capture due to the low lighting and propensitiy for other people to wander in shot. A large amount of patience was needed!
Stepping inside the cathedral nave
Stepping into the main body of Gloucester Cathedral reveals towering perpendicular style pillars and stunning soaring vaults. The sheer scale and atmospheric light filtering through the historic stained glass make it an unforgettable space to explore.
